CAA AGM '97

The Annual General Meeting of the Computer Applications in Archaeology Conference was held at Birmingham University on Saturday 12th April 1997.

The meeting started at 10.15 a.m. with N. Ryan in the chair and about 70 members present.

1) Minutes of the last meeting (Sunday 27th March 1996, Iasi)

These were accepted.

2) Matters arising from the minutes

Four matters arose from the minutes of 1996:

- Kelly Fennema was appointed as membership secretary.

- There are regional chapters in the UK (meeting at York in 1996) and the Netherlands (first CAANL meeting in September 1996 in Amersfoort), and there will be a CAASpain meeting in 1997.

- Copyright issue: Sue Laflin, Clive Orton and Irwin Scollar are appointed as holding officers.

- The Leiden 1995 proceedings are published and the Iasi 1996 proceedings are on its way.

3) Chairman's Report

The chairman reported that the committee had met on three occasions (in Iasi on 27th March 1996, in Boxgrove on 8th July 1996, and in Liverpool on 16th December 1996) and had conducted most of its other business by E-mail.

The Chairman thanked all the organisers of the 1997 CAA confernce: Sue Laflin, Vince Gaffney, Martijn van Leusen, Sally Exon and Lucie Dingwall.

4) Treasurer's Report

CAA has a positive balance of 1685 pounds. Eleven people have been given a bursary this year. The books will be ready for auditing at the end of the year.

5) Elections

Chair: Nick Ryan was nominated, agreed to stand and was re-elected unopposed.

Treasurer: Stephen Stead was nominated, agreed to stand and was re-elected unopposed.

Secretary: Hans Kamermans was nominated, agreed to stand and was re-elected unopposed.

Membership Secretary: Kely Fennema was nominated, agreed to stand and was re-elected unopposed.

Kris Lockyear, Virgil Mihailescu-Bīrliba & Vasile Chirica (CAA96 organisers) were thanked as ex-officio members.

The following are ex-officio members of the Steering Committee for 1997-98:

· Sue Laflin, Vince Gaffney and Martijn van Leusen (CAA97 organisers).
·
Juan Barcelo and Asuncio Vila (CAA98 organisers).
· Edward Bourke and Gabriel Cooney (CAA99 organiser)
· Kris Lockyear and Dave Wheatley (editorial and WWW).

The occasional post 'students & low income' is still vacant. No nominations were received.

Auditor

The motion was accepted to wave the election of an auditor until the books are auditable.

6) CAA Meeting in 1998

CAA98 will be in Barcelona (Spain) from Tuesday 24th until Saturday the 28th of March 1998.

It will be a conference with a Mediterranean flavour. The conference theme will be the future: new techniques for old times, doing archaeology today for tomorrow’s society. There will be sessions about the virtual reality of the archaeology of towns, the use of computers in archaeological fieldwork and the laboratory, archaeological explanation, heritage management, learning and training. The emphasis will more be on applications than on techniques.

There will be a festival of virtual reality.

7) CAA99

Only one bid was received: Dublin (Ireland).

Edward Bourke and Gabriel Cooney will be the main organisers.

The conference will take place in Dublin castle and Trinity college both situated in the lively centre of Dublin. The National museum will also be involved. Dell computer will support the conference.

Vote: Unanimously in favour. CAA99 will thereforebe in Dublin.

8) Any Other Business

The next CAAUK meeting will be in Southampton.

Ian Johnson announces the establishing of an AustralasianCAA in the near future.
