Minutes of the Computer Applications in Archaeology Business Meeting held on 22nd March 1989 at Derwent College, University of York.

The meeting started at 2.00pm with Clive Orton in the Chair. Over 60 members were present.

1 Minutes of 1988 Business Meeting

The minutes of the 1988 meeting were approved.

2 Chairman's Report

The committee during 1988/9 has consisted of Clive Orton (Chairman), Ben Booth (Secretary), Clive Ruggles (Treasurer), Sue Laflin (organiser CAA88), Julian Richards, Jef Maytom, and Karen Torevell (organisers CAA89), and Sebastian Rahtz and Roger Leech (organisers CAA90).

The committee met on 26th April, 9th December and 16th February.

The main business had been to oversee arrangements for CAA89, finance (see Treasurer's Report below), co-ordinating the mailing lists, and the Multivariate Meeting of the Royal Statistical Society.

3 Treasurer's Report

Clive Ruggles circulated a statement of the current financial situation (attached). For the first time CAA was 'in the black'. The accounts book was available for inspection.

4 Membership Fee

It was agreed to maintain the membership fee for CAA at the present rate of £2.00. (For those attending CAA it is levied as part of the conference fee - the £2.00 needs to be paid separately by those who wish to remain on the mailing list and vote at meetings but are not able to attend CAA).

5 Auditors

Sue Laflin suggested that auditors would be a useful safeguard, particularly against criticism of the Treasurer. Clive Ruggles thanked her for the suggestion, and said that he would investigate the possibility of appointing an auditor.

6 Election of Officers

Sue Laflin has now to retire from the Committee. Clive Orton thanked her for all she had done for CAA. As no other nominations were received the present Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer were re-elected. In addition the Committee for 1989/90 will consist of the organisers of CAA89, CAA90, and CAA91.

7 Future Venues

Clive Orton announced that CAA90 would be in Southampton, and CAA91 would be in Oxford - suggestions for a theme were sought. Suggestions for a venue for 1992 were sought, preferably in the North of UK or in Europe.

8 1983 Conference Proceedings

John Haigh agreed to provide the masters so that a good photocopy of CAA83 proceedings may be made to complete sets of publications.

9 Cost of CAA88

John Wilcock raised the matter of the cost of CAA88, and the likely cost of CAA89. Sebastian Rahtz said that the aim was to contain the size of CAA89 to a single volume; this was to be achieved through editorial control.

10 Further comments

Clive Orton asked for further comments on CAA to be sent to the committee.
