CAA AGM '87

Computer Applications in Archaeology, Minutes of the discussion held at CAA87 on the future of CAA.

The meeting commenced at c. 3.00 p.m. on 29 March 1987, Clive Ruggles in the Chair.

Over 50 delegates were present.

in a series of formal votes the following motions were passed:

(A) GENERAL MOTIONS PERTAINING TO THE CAA STEERING COMMITTEE

  1. That a permanent CAA Steering Committee (hereinafter "the committee") be set up with immediate effect, its responsibilities including

(i) the organisation of CAA annual conferences;

(ii) the holding and administration of the permanent conference float;

(iii) the holding and administration of the CAA mailing list.

(2)That the committee consist of approximately seven members, including one designated Convenor.

(3) That no individual may serve on the committee for more than three consecutive years.

(4) That the membership of the committee include the local organisers of CAA conferences for two years in advance, together with a representative from the local organisation of the conference immediately past.

(5) That the committee as a whole be responsible for the content of any CAA conference, appointing session organisers as appropriate. Some of these may be co-opted onto the committee.

(6) That CAA Proceedings should in future be published as soon as possible AFTER the Conference, but not before for distribution at the conference.

(7) That the committee be empowered to remove a conference from any proposed venue should arrangements prove not to satisfy any of the aforementioned requirements.

(8) That the title should reflect the importance of Quantitative Methods, and in future should be "CAA" (main title), followed by "Computing and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology" (sub-title).

(9) That precise and detailed Terms of Reference for the committee be drawn up by the committee itself and presented at CAA88 for ratification.

(B) MOTIONS PERTAINING TO THE CAA STEERING COMMITTEE FOR 1987/88

(10) That the following comprise the initial committee:

Clive Ruggles

(11) That Clive Orton be the Convenor.

(12) That CAA89 be held in York hosted jointly by the York Archaeological Trust and the University of York Department of Archaeology.

(CAA88 had already been allocated to Birmingham at CAA86.)

(*** It was noted that four offers stand for venues for CAA90: Birmingham; London (Institute of Archaeology); Southampton; and Edinburgh (Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust/Heriot-Watt University.)

(13) That the meeting requires the committee to convene in Birmingham within six weeks of the close of CAA87, to commence organisation of CAA88.

(14) That the committee should examine the questions of

(a) whether tutorials should continue;

(b) whether the thematic approach should continue; and

(c) whether the conference should be held at weekends or midweek.

Motion (1) was passed with one vote against.

Motion (6) was passed with three votes against.

The other motions were passed nem con.
